The cause of an electrical fire in Winnipeg’s city centre remains unclear.
Main street was shut down Saturday afternoon, after an electrical fire broke out in the city’s underground cable system.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the area around 3:30. Fire crews closed down the intersection while Manitoba Hydro cut power to the area.
That power caused the city’s traffic lights to stop working along Main Street, from Higgins to Logan. Police directed traffic at every intersection without working lights.
But Winnipeg’s downtown traffic came to a crawl as a result of the outages.
1,400 customers in the Exchange district were without hydro Saturday evening.
The Bell Hotel was also evacuated as a precaution.
Manitoba Hydro and fire crews worked to restore power by Saturday night. The hydro company had to de-energize the area so it was safe to work in. they transferred service to restore power in the area. the lines that burned will be fixed early next week. …read more
